Ashes to Ashes
Chilean Artist Burns Student Debt Papers Worth $500 Million
During a student takeover of Universidad del Mar in Chile, documents representing $500 million worth of student debt were burned to ashes.
The artist Francisco Tapia Salinas, also known as "Papas Fritas," admits to burning the papers as part of an art project without the knowledge of the other students. He posted a video on Youtube on May 12, explaining his actions.
“It’s over, it’s finished. You don’t have to pay another peso [of your student loan debt]. We have to lose our fear, our fear of being thought of as criminals because we’re poor. I am just like you, living a shitty life, and I live it day by day — this is my act of love for you.”
