All Eyes on Isaac Kariuki, Miranda Leigh, Rachel Hyman
What's good with your favs from online...
Internet sweethearts Isaac, Miranda, and Rachel share their springtime secrets, from drinks to memes to trends they wanna see more of, plus plenty of what they're into these days.
Where do you hail from? I'm from Houston, Texas and after four years of living in New York, I finally got an ID so I guess I have to stop trying to prove I'm not a New Yorker.
How would you describe your signature style? La Llorona (the 1960 version) x Gena Rowlands in Love Streams. All black everything except for my nails which are usually painted white like Wite-Out. Buttoned up collars, turtlenecks, long hair everywhere – the more I'm covered, the more I'm comfortable.
Fav drink? When I can find it, fountain Dr Pepper; when I can't, a can of Coke.
In your eyes, what's missing from culture right now? Can we bring back that trend of teen movies loosely based on Shakespeare plays?
What's a trend that you're excited to see more of this year? I'm glad sobriety is in in 2016 because it means I don't have to feel bad about not drinking when my friends want to go to bars.
Do you have any spring cleaning rituals or goals? I like to clean when I'm avoiding things, so my apartment is always pretty clean.
What have you been craving lately? I'm going home to Texas this month for the first time in a year, so I've been thinking about foods I can only have there like Whataburger, eggchiladas at Chapultepec Lupita, tacos al carbon at El Ranchero, and pan dulce.
Any people or projects you're really into right now? I just heard that Miguel x Kacey Musgraves collab and I already can't stop playing it. Zayn's high note in It's You makes my heart melt. B L A C K I E is the best performer around. Maxo Kream's latest mixtape. Kelela's Hallucinogen EP. ANTI. I'm into the New Lovers series by Badlands Unlimited. Writers who I stop what I'm doing to read include Durga Chew-Bose, Doreen St. Felix, Hannah Black, Anne Boyer, Monica McClure, and Larissa Pham. Always re-reading Clarice Lispector, Annie Baker, and Sarah Kane. I'm also interested to see what CHIFLADAzine (a zine based in San Antonio by and for latinx) does.
Where do you hail from? I’m originally from Kenya. Currently surviving in London.
How would you describe your signature style? I used to wear a lot of patterns and colors but the last couple years it’s just been monochrome white and black – blue on occasion. I wondered why that was and I discovered that my eyes are pretty sensitive and I’m not very good with overstimulating visuals. I like muted and uniform optics otherwise I get a massive headache. Supermarkets are like parkour for my senses.
Fav drink? Apple pie milkshake.
In your eyes, what's missing from culture right now? I suppose more places in the day time where you can actually just relax without having to purchase something to be rewarded that privilege. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough.
What's a trend that you're excited to see more of this year? I’m excited for more positive affirmation memes. “What are those” died so “Damn Daniel” could live! I think that’s heart-warming. I doubt anyone else needs to feel insecure or tormented for the sake of others laughing for 3.25 seconds. There’s a lot more weight in things reaching thousands of views than we realize.
Do you have any spring cleaning rituals or goals? I put on an audiobook that I’ve been putting off for months or a really contemplative podcast while I clean, it’s basically coercive cultivation but highly rewarding. This time it’s gonna be the backlog of Hello Cinema, an Iranian cinema podcast.
What have you been craving lately? Central heating.
Any people or projects you're really into right now? The wonderful Minh Nguyen runs Chat Room, a series of forums engaged in Art + the internet with all the nuance we desperately needed. She also co-created one of my favorite zines, Night Pong and they got a new issue out now. I’m also currently really into Frankie J’s 2005 album The One featuring Obsession (No Es Amor).
Where do you hail from? I mostly grew up in Baltimore. I live in Chicago now, my birthplace, and this is where I have the deepest roots.
How would you describe your signature style? Comfy goth, shoutout @darth__mouth for the term. I don’t think I’ll ever wear normal pants again. I feel so much better when I’m comfortable in my clothing.
Fav drink? Grapefruit juice lately. Mint tea makes me feel calm.
What's a trend that you're excited to see more of this year? The fakes getting exposed.
Do you have any spring cleaning rituals or goals? No rituals, but over the last couple years I’ve been working to make wherever I’m living feel more like a home. In the last year I’ve gotten into plants. I have this purple passion plant that I didn’t think would survive since it needs a lot of light and my apartment doesn’t get much, but it’s been thriving so much that it’s starting to outgrow its pot. I plan to repot it, even bought the new pot already, but am trying to hold on until spring to give it the best chance to survive.
What have you been craving lately? More plants (I have to limit myself though). More quiet and less anxiety. Good books. My boyfriend got me a Kindle recently and I’ve read more than I have in years. If anyone reading this has a book recommendation, they should feel free to tweet it at me.
Any people or projects you're really into right now? I’ve admired Lorena Cupcake for a long time now. Check out their writing on music, mental health, and gender. Everything Jes Skolnik writes about trauma is gold and so very important. I’m into Twitter bots. There’s a bunch made by one person – Tiny Gallery, Tiny Gardens, Tiny Cities, Tiny Forests – that are creative and charming.
