Cameos: Alli Logout, Manuel Arturo Abreu, and Gaelle Win Robin

Winter is a time for making moves. We cut out what holds us back and fan the flames of what gives us life and warmth. Whether it's releasing an album with friends, taking on a new clothing project, or refining a morning routine, our cameos this month are making it work where they are right now.

    Where are you from?
I grew up in small southern and central Texas towns. Currently, I live in New Orleans. Of course, where I came from effects how I operate; my fam identifies as rednecks and are devout Church of Christ members. I'm constantly unlearning the fuckery of it all. The spirit, energy and legacy of the South fuels my art. It's so much apart of my being, my anger, and my attitude.

Tell us about your signature style.
A baby playing a cowboy on acid: young, gifted, black, in leather.

    What’s your take on astrology?
I'm only gonna answer this so the queers will stop asking me. I'm a Virgo sun, Gemini rising, and Cancer moon. I heavily identify with my Cancer moon. I'm a very sensitive person and everything from the good to the bad makes me cry. I use to hate it, but I'm finally at a place where I can look at this quality within myself and realize I just have a lot of love to give. I know I sound like a hippie but I ain't mad.

    Favorite beverage?

What’s your favorite song to get you going or cheer you up?
“Weird Therapy” by Yer Man and “The Cowboy Song” by Thin Lizzy

What’s your most recent accomplishment/thing you’re proud of?
My band Special Interest is about to release our debut album Spiraling. I couldn't be more excited. Every song is so fun and different. I have never been in a band where I have had such a deep connection with the members. I'm also in the pre-production stages of a new film and have been feeling pretty damn accomplished to finally be making movvvesss.

What’s missing from culture right now?
The complete and total trusting of no-wave, patience and understanding that people grow at different rates, compassion, femme wall-to-wall mosh pits, and honestly my friends. Also, we need less celebrating and supporting white mediocrity.

Any people or projects you’re really into right now/want to hype?
Shiiiiiiiit, I feel like no one knows of this new wave of queer musicians in New Orleans so I wanna say them first! The scene is so insane right now. First off, Ruth who plays synth in Special Interest has a solo industrial project called Psychic Hotline. Maria, who plays guitar in Special Interests, has another amazing no-wave band called TVMA. Nathan, who plays bass, has the punk bands Patsy and Mystic Inane. Softie, featuring my friends Xavier and Nessa, play some dreamy industrial dance music. Sultana Isham is this amazing violinist who Just released a EP called Blood Moon. My very good friend Local Honey has a noise pop band called Oblivia and my other homie Gabby, who goes by Delish on stage, is the best rapper in the city. Finally the DJs Bouffont Bouffont, Johnny 5, Kathi and Lil Jodeci have really torn the city up. This is all happening in New Orleans right now, I highly recommend checking out all these bands. Now, non-New Orleans musicians I can't get enough of: Farai who honestly put out the best EP of 2017. Uhm, punk is really boring right now but Xylitol from Seattle and NEON from San Francisco got it down. But over all, Breathing Light from Chicago is one of the most underrated bands in America. Like, it pisses me off they aren't huge. Earthbound from Oakland are really doing that dreamy freak thing real good. I can never get enough of DJ Haram’s sounds and textures.

    Winter: love or hate?

    Where are you posted up?
I'm currently staying just over the Hudson River in Jersey City, spending most of my time in Manhattan. I moved here two years ago from Portland, Maine, but I grew up in a small town just outside Portland. Being a queer kid from the woods requires resilience. It forced growth upon me through isolation. I like to think it's caused me to access pieces of myself and creativity that I wouldn't have if I hadn't grown up under those circumstances. I'm stronger, more gregarious, unconcealed.

    Describe your style.
My friend Naomi says "smooth, feral r&b dad." I think that's pretty accurate. Like if George Michael and Prince had a baby who hangs out with Stevie Nicks a lot and listens to SZA’s "Ctrl" on repeat. Yeah, that.

Do you apply astrology to your life?
I'm a Cancer on the cusp of Leo. Cancer ascendant, Leo moon. Astrology is a good way for me to relate to people that I wouldn't otherwise understand.

What’s one song you can’t get out of your head lately?
"Deliverance" by Rationale is on heavy rotation.

What’s your morning routine like? Any essential body care products?
I'm convinced toner, moisturizer, and a well-rounded diet will keep you cute.

Trends that you’re excited to see more of this year?
Excited for more people to be dressing more how they want to dress, and less how others tell them to.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Humble and content. Wiser and more genuine. Confident and thriving.
