Mykki Blanco Portrays the Social War In Video “High School Never Ends”
Mykki Blanco’s latest music video “High School Never Ends” brings us a love story not unlike Romeo and Juliet. But more than being Shakespearian in its references: Mykki falling in love with a white skinhead, sharing stolen moments; the video really paints a picture of a social war of sorts.
The video captures sentiments of queer ultraviolence and physical retaliation against vigilante homophobic and transphobic violence, but also the affinities we build across difference and how the world responds to them. In the grand climax, we see Mykki’s black queer family fight with fists and knives in the streets against white German skinheads.
