Listen to YATTA’s Debut EP Spirit Said Yes!

We’re excited to premiere YATTA’s multifaceted debut EP Spirit Said Yes! YATTA is the stage name of Brooklyn-based, Sierra Leonean-American singer Yatta Zoker. In addition to being a musician, Zoker is a multimedia artist, poet, and member of the DIY venue collective Silent Barn.

YATTA teased the EP by releasing the music video for Desert Song, which could be described as a wild ride through her subconscious and inspirations. Co-directed by Raphael Linden and YATTA herself, the video features shots of herself resting on piles of pastel rocks and trips through the streets of Sierra Leone. The rest of the songs on the EP are varied. Altogether, her soundscapes do the unusual of calling to mind both extremely terrestrial feelings of rootedness and belonging, and the manic embodiment of wireless networks and sugary snacks. Being in touch with oneself, one’s body, generational trauma and healing is not antithetical to being a cyborg; perhaps that’s exactly what unleashes the cyborg.

When the world is looking increasingly bleak and monotonous, fantastic imagery recalling distant places or unearthly interiors might feel like an escape. But YATTA has managed to pull from all of the ghostly influences that build her up and makes them real. It feels like the gentle nudge to get off the computer and make stuff with your friends.
